I had an old tree that was dying and the exterminator told me that was the source. they were eating the roots. so it was cut down and removed and ended the issue with the ants.
so you have something that is feeding the. a wood pile, old dying tree. that would be the sources and you can save the $ extermonator estimates.
but i would fix fast, they were traveling to my wooden garage and making more damage.

13|Jan|2012 2There are products on the market. Bayer makes a carpenter ant/termite spray and there is also a spectricide brand at depot that is a little cheaper. Spray around your foundation, then around any tree trunks, then around any wood laying around. If you find the source in the process, you must destroy it. It could be coming from an old tree stump or root or even a wood pile. In any event, you need to spray it all down. I have a bug fetish so each year I spray all the trees about 3 feet up and also the perimiter of my house at least once per summer.
